Demeter is an ecological association built upon a network of individual certification organisations world-wide. Companies with the Demeter certification are bound to strict contracts. The standard covers every step from agricultural production to final packaging and is based on biodynamic agriculture systems founded by Rudolph Steiner where crops are produced holistically with the help of traditional knowledge, time and astrological consideration.
The standard prohibits the use of synthetic fertilisers, chemical plant protection agents, artificial additives during processing as well as measures to strengthen the cycle of life in soil.
In the UK The Biodynamic Agricultural Association (BDAA) administers Demeter certification. Demeter Certification is fully recognised by DEFRA (Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs).
