The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Organic Program (NOP) regulates the standards for any farm, wild crop harvesting, or handling operation that wants to sell an agricultural product as organically produced.
The National Organic Program (NOP) develops, implements, and administers national production, handling, and labelling standards for organic agricultural products. The NOP also accredits the certifying agents (foreign and US) who inspect organic production and handling operations to certify that they meet USDA standards. The backbone of the standards are one of the few government backed standards in the world and is based on The Organic Foods Production Act of 1990, part of the 1990 Farm Bill.
