Experts say saving water can save energy too

How can saving water help reduce carbon emissions? Waterwise is set to publish a report showing us the connection.

The leading authority on water efficiency says 5% of all carbon emissions come from heating water in the home, and so it follows that saving water inevitably leads to saving energy.

The report shows though that the links go far beyond water usage in the home. Vast amounts of water are used to cool power stations, and in times of drought rivers can be too hot for cooling or can drop to levels below the minimum intake. This can, and has, led to power cuts in parts of the world.

Waterwise also shows that 1% of all carbon emissions in the UK come from the pumping and treating of water.

And so, the failure of one utility can lead to the failure of another.

The report will be published in September, and, following on from that, Waterwise will be speaking to the government about the establishment of a water and energy working group.

Jacob Tompkins, managing director at Waterwise, said: "A water and energy working group would allow a coordinated approach to issues, such as drought, that have a powerful effect on both sectors.

"In times of water shortage, it’s especially important that people are conscious of their water usage."

Here at BigGreenSmile you can find a wide selection of products, including a waterless car wash, that carry the Waterwise Water Marque, an award presented by Waterwise to products that reduce water wastage or raise awareness of water efficiency.
