Waterwise's top five tips for saving water and money

Waterwise, the leading authority on water efficiency in the UK, has come up with some helpful tips to help you do your bit to save water in 2012.

With 2012 looking to be a dry year, following on from a below par 2011, now’s the time to adopt some, if not all, of Waterwise’s "watery resolutions that are kind to the environment and your pocket."

Waterwise suggests starting off 2012 by getting a water meter fitted. Most people who have meters fitted use 10% less water and also have better control over their bills.

Save energy, money and water by making sure your pipes and boiler are lagged. Around 25% of our energy bills go on heating water. And don’t let those hot taps keep on running.

Which leads neatly on to tip number three. Have a shower, not a bath; and fit your shower with an eco-friendly shower head that can feel as good as a power shower whilst reducing your water use by up to 50%.

Tip number four may depend on where you live. Craftily suggesting you "get your butt in shape", Waterwise recommend a water butt to catch all the rain. And then use it to water your plants. As I say, could depend on where you live; if you’re in the middle of a tower block perhaps you should give this one a miss.

Tip number five comes in the shape of a mild telling off. "Behave yourself." Come on now, admit it - how many of you leave the tap running when you brush your teeth?

I can only join in with this tongue in cheek scolding because I know I do. Very occasionally. I’m getting better. Turning the tap off when brushing your teeth can save 30 litres of water per person per day.
