Energy company complaints - Which? succeeds where Ofgem fails

by Simon 24. January 2012 12:00

Green energy company Ecotricity has teamed up with Which? Magazine to highlight the customer complaint records of all energy companies; something Ofgem, the industry regulator, has so far failed to do.

Ofgem makes all energy companies publish their complaint records, but as Ecotricity’s founder Dale Vince points out: "They quietly get buried on energy company websites – and customers never see them."

Now the figures are collected together in one place, making it easier for consumers to contrast and compare and come to their own conclusions as to which energy company it is best to go with.

For the past two years Ecotricity has been compiling the Customer Complaints League Table and now Which? has taken over the role.

Dale Vince said: "Ofgem should be publicly reporting these figures all in the one place, so that customers can make an informed choice when comparing the customer service record of energy suppliers, just like they can when comparing tariffs.

"What otherwise is the purpose of collecting the data? We asked Ofgem but they said no. It’s a stance made all the harder to understand given the regulator’s recent encouragement for people to switch supplier – as some kind of antidote to high energy bills, and Big Six market dominance."

Ecotricity, unsurprisingly, comes out well in the list with just 28 recorded complaints in a year; four times better than any of the other energy suppliers.

The ‘not for dividend’ company is one of a number of companies offering a true green alternative when it comes to buying energy, and the company’s ‘fair price promise’ guarantees you will pay no more than you would if you stuck with any of ‘The Big Six’.
