Copenhagen summit 'is last chance to avoid climate change'

Copenhagen summit The Copenhagen Climate Change summit is the last chance for world leaders to avoid major long-term global warming.

Chris Walker, campaigner with Campaign against Climate Change, made the assertion after the first day of the international negotiations, echoing the comments made during the opening ceremony by Danish prime minister Lars Loekke Rasmussen.

Mr Rasmussen told delegates at the talks that citizens across the world are relying on an agreement being reached in Denmark, adding that Copenhagen "will be Hopenhagen" for the next two weeks.

Responding to the prime minister's call to action, Mr Walker said: "It is an opportunity for a binding agreement that really can put the interests of the people and stability of the Earth first.

"It is probably the most important international meeting ever," he added.

This is particularly the case, he said, because the Copenhagen talks are the last scheduled international meeting before the world reaches a tipping point towards climate change - which the campaigner predicts will occur between 2011 and 2015.ADNFCR-2539-ID-19502610-ADNFCR
