Obama 'may attend Copenhagen Climate Change summit'

Obama Barack Obama has announced that he will attend December's Copenhagen Climate Change summit if there is a chance that a global deal to cut emissions can be done.

It is the strongest assertion yet from Obama that he may attend the critical conference and comes after poorer countries last week threatened to walk out of talks amid fears that developed nations would not do their bit to slash emissions.

Speaking to Reuters, the US president said he would cross the Atlantic to be at the talks if "we are on the brink of a meaningful agreement and my presence in Copenhagen will make a difference in tipping us over edge".

However, he acknowledged that his hands are tied by the US Senate, a fact which has been backed up by his main advisor Carol Browner.

Ms Browner admitted in October that the chance of having a bill committing to comprehensive energy reviews in the US signed by the president in time for the conference "is not likely".ADNFCR-2539-ID-19451186-ADNFCR
