The government's energy-saving initiative to rid homes of costly old heating systems should be extended to more people.
This is according to Gordon Miller, founder of eco-friendly advice website Whatgreenhome, who described the boiler scrappage programme as a "great scheme" but lamented the fact that it is only available to 125,000 residences.
Furthermore, consumers planning to aid their household
energy saving by trading in their old, inefficient G-rated boiler for a new model may not have much time to do so.
According to figures released yesterday (February 15th 2010) by the government and the
Energy Saving Trust, 43.8 per cent of the vouchers have already been claimed.
Mr Miller urged policymakers to capitalise on the success of the initiative by rolling it out to B, C, D, E and F-rated appliances.
However, he noted that Whitehall officials will have to decide whether doing this would prove to be cost effective.
"It is now an equation for the government to do - how much it is going to cost them versus how much saving they are going to make," he said.
