Householders in Werrington have been invited to take part in an energy-saving trial which aims to educate people on how to cut their power usage.
Under the initiative, which is being run by Peterborough City Council, residents will be loaned an energy monitor for three weeks starting from today (February 3rd 2010).
Over the next 21 days, the participants will keep a diary of their gas and electricity consumption. It is hoped that the scheme will allow them to see where power is being wasted and where energy-saving measures can be used in future.
Up to 50 households will be able to take part in the programme.
"The energy monitors are easy to use and the displays are easy to understand," said Matthew Lee, the council's deputy leader and cabinet member for environment capital.
He added: "They can help residents maximise their energy efficiency and possibly achieve savings of up to 20 per cent."
This development comes at an important time for consumers, as figures from Moneysupermarket recently revealed that people across the UK are set to be hit with their highest ever winter utilities bills.
