Council promotes green homes

It's good to see authorities across the UK are proactively trying to encourage people to become more eco-friendly.

This week, I read that Hambleton District Council is the latest body to tackle the issue head on.

Councillor Bob Baker told the Darlington and Stockton Times that it is currently working to improve the energy efficiency of council buildings.

However, he said he wants members of the public to take similar steps as well and embrace the idea of energy saving.

"We want to help our residents tackle climate change in their homes," he commented.

Councillor Baker revealed that the authority is offering a number of grants to encourage energy saving in households across the region.

He added that it is "vital we all take action to reduce our carbon footprints" and help to tackle climate change.

I hope people take note of these comments, but I can't help but remember recent remarks from Paul King, chief executive of the UK Green Building Council.

He told BBC News this week that while people are aware of the climate change issue, many feel that living in a green home will do little to "change the world".

I don't like that sort of defeatist attitude. We all need to do our bit – we can't rely on governments to take the hard decisions – they just won't do it. So start by following our green tips on how to live a greener life. And if you have any more tips please share them with us.
