Top British actress Thandie Newton has decided to return to natural hair, it has been reported.
The Styleite website says she wants to let her hair go naturally curly as a good example to her daughters.
She told her friend and makeup artist Kay Montano: “I didn’t want my daughters to judge their beautiful curls.”
Apparently she lets her daughters’ hair grow naturally and has made the decision not to give them chemical relaxers.
She was inspired by Chris Rock’s film Good Hair, which revealed that the products used by many black women to straighten their hair contain enough lye to dissolve a Coke can, according to the Styleite website.
Thandie says she has struggled against the pressure to fit in since she was a child. “I remember when I was 7 at my convent school, it was school photo day so all the kids came looking their best,” she says.
“Mum did my hair in 20 or so ‘corn rows’ with green wooden beads on each end to match my school uniform. The nuns were appalled, they wouldn’t let me have my picture taken. I felt embarrassed, disappointed, ashamed. Can you imagine how my Mum must have felt? There was a mild ruckus and the next day I had my picture taken.”
