Models take to catwalk for sustainable fashionNew York Fashion Week has welcomed the second season of the Green Shows, featuring the best in sustainable and recycled fashion.

Models strutted down the catwalk draped in some of the most environmentally-friendly couture by designer Gary Harvey, previously creative director of Levi Strauss and Dockers Europe.

This year, the event was held at a new eco-friendly apartment building in New York City's East Village.

Gloria Dawson of the Daily Green wrote in the Huffington Post this week, saying Harvey's collection was designed to challenge the common perception of second-hand clothing.

"Too many garments end up in landfill sites. They are deemed aesthetically redundant and get discarded at the end of the season when there are often years of wear left," said the eco designer.

Perhaps the most interesting dress, amongst a collection that included a garment made form 30 issues of the Financial Times, was made from natural beauty packaging.

The event's sponsor, Weleda, had 350 boxes of its Skin Food lotion converted into a green, catwalk-ready dress.
