Sea eagles to return

by Alasdair 22. November 2008 10:13

Sea eagleSea eagles could be reintroduced to Norfolk next summer under a new scheme. The huge birds, with a wingspan of up to 2.5 m, became extinct in England 200 years ago, persecuted by farmers and hunters. Sea eagles were successfully reintroduced to Scotland in 1975 with a current population of 40 breeding pairs producing 34 chicks last year.

Plans have been drawn up by Natural England, the RSPB and Anglian Water to bring back the birds and consultations are planned with local people and landowners prior to the reintroduction. There may be some opposition from farmers -- in Scotland, farmers claim that many newborn lambs are killed each year by the local sea eagles.

On a rather small-scale, you may be interested in our FSC certified nest box, which is suitable for blue tits, narsh tits, coal tits, wrens, great tits, sparrows, robins, wagtails and spotted flycatchers. Why not set one up ready for next year's breeding season?
