Wind turbine maker Vestas has announced it will cut 600 jobs in the UK - about half its workforce - and possibly close its factory on the Isle of Wight. Making the announcement, Vestas, which is one of the largest renewable energy manufacturers in the UK, blamed lack of support from the UK Government and the difficulty in obtaining permission for wind power projects in this country.
The company says it is not suffering from the recession and expects 20% growth this year. Instead, it says the government has failed to create the conditions to allow renewable energy projects to flourish.
The UK currently generates about 5% of its energy from renewable sources. EU targets require the country generates more than 15% by 2020. That's going to be a tough target to reach.
