Surrey homes 'cutting water bills'

A campaign to cut water bills for Surrey residents is underway, it has been revealed.

Water-saving devices are being fitted in homes across the county to help households reduce their consumption and address the growing problem of water shortages.

Over 1,000 households in Redhill and Merstham will benefit from the pilot Tap into Savings scheme.

Shower timers, shower adaptors and toilet cistern conversion kits are among the water-saving technologies being installed.

According to uSwitch, the average amount of water used when having a bath is 80 litres - which is four times as much as the average person consumes a day in a developing country.

The Tap into Savings scheme is a partnership between Sutton and East Surrey Water, Reigate and Banstead Borough Council and the Environment Agency.

Alison Murphy, from Sutton and East Surrey Water, said to the BBC: "We have a duty to protect our resources and plan for a future when there might be dry years." ADNFCR-2539-ID-19661111-ADNFCR
