Calendula officinalis
Calendula, also known as common pot Marigold, is known for its soothing and gentle action and is grown across the world as a garden plant. This generous emollient oil promotes suppleness when used on the skin and can be used as an anti-inflammatory.
It is an effective salve for itching or flaking skin conditions and also combats water retention and cellulite.
Greek, Arabic and Indian medicine have long made use of this ointment, and it has gained the name ‘Russian penicillin’ because of its widespread use in Russia. It is especially good for mature skin, and is used as a protective agent in haircare products.
The name comes from the Latin kalendae, meaning first day of the month, perhaps because calendula flowers bloom at the start of most months of the calendar.
