Solar photovoltaic cell

Photovoltaic cells convert sun into electricity.  (Photo = light, voltaic=electricity).  Photovoltaic cells are most commonly made of silicon acting as a semiconductor as it absorbs sunlight and so absorbs the energy. This energy sets loose electrons and this flow or current is then drawn from the cell.

This diagram perhaps illustrates it best.
