The Weleda name
Weleda was the name of a priestess of healing from the dawn of Christianity who lived in what is today Germany. She inspired her people to rebel against the Roman invaders but was eventually captured and taken to Rome where she died in about 80AD. The name occurs a little later in France -- she was the leader of a group of Celtic priestesses renowned for their understanding of the uses of plants. Dispersed by the Romans, some of this group fled to England.
