Soap Nuts are from the Sapindus genus, a speies of shrub from the Lychee family, and native to the tropics. The fruit are called soap nuts as the name Sapindus is from the Latin 'saponis' meaning soap.
In India soap nuts have been used as a washing detergent for hundreds of years.
The Soapnut shells contain Saponins (a natural surfactant) that on contact with water release mild suds.
Soapnuts are also commonly used in Ayurvedic products and have been used in Ayurvedic medicine for treatments from problematic skin conditions such as eczema & psoriasis.
