Wave power

The world's first commercial wave farm is the Aguçadoura Wave Park  (pictured below) off the coast of Portugal which opened in September 2008 and can produce enough electricity to power 1,500 homes.  It is quite amazing it has taken so long for a wave farm to become a reality, the first patent for wave energy conversion was issued in 1799!

Wave power captures the energy from waves on the surface of the ocean and is distinct from tidal power.

Wave power uses technology to capture the motion of the ocean waves on the surface to create electricity.

An exciting new project is in development in the UK which will see 4 (one still to be confirmed) wave power installations testing different wave technologies which will see them connected through a Wave Hub off the north coast of Cornwall so electricity created is available on the national grid.
