Good Roll – building toilets in Ghana

There are few products more essential than toilet paper. And, while loo roll might not be the first thing you think of when you’re trying to shop ethically, the brand you choose really can make a difference.

Good Roll donates a whopping 50% of its profits to help build toilets in Africa. Around 1/3 of people still don’t have access to a toilet and handwashing facilities, which increases the risk of diarrhoea and other illnesses. And in countries with little access to medicine, those conditions can be deadly. Half a million children under five die from diarrhoea every year.

Good Roll has built 100s of toilets so far, benefitting more than 10,000 people. But that’s not the only thing that sets Good Roll apart…

Most toilet roll is made from cutting down trees and comes to you wrapped in plastic. Good Roll takes a different approach. Its loo rolls are made from bamboo or recycled paper. Bamboo grows very quickly so is far more sustainable than virgin paper. (It’s also super soft on your bum.)

The toilet roll is free from chlorine, synthetic dyes and other chemicals you might rather keep away from sensitive areas. And the packaging is plastic-free.

If you suffer from eczema, psoriasis or another skin condition, you may have heard of skincare brand Salcura. If not, it’s well worth checking out, as it sells a wide range of products for adults and children with super-sensitive skin. As one customer told us, Salcura “keeps my eczema in check until it heals naturally.”

Salcura donates a percentage of its profits to the Teenage Cancer Trust, a charity which supports young adults who have been diagnosed with cancer. Their key service is providing specialist teenage units in NHShospitals.

Big Green Smile – giving essential products to people in Gambia

If a product gets returned to us, we always check whether it’s still usable. Sometimes, we can’t resell it, for example if it’s been opened or the box has been damaged. But that doesn’t mean it can’t be used.

We donate these products to communities in need. Recently, we worked with Goods for Gambia to pass household and personal care products onto people who often struggle to afford basic essentials.

And remember, when you shop with Big Green Smile, every single thing you buy has passed our strict ethical standards.
