Farmers and water companies urged to act now by Environment Agency

Farmers and water companies are being encouraged to protect water supplies now to reduce the risk of restrictions in the future.

A report from the Environment Agency encourages farmers to invest in winter storage and urges water companies to plan ahead and continue to run campaigns encouraging consumers to use water wisely.

The Drought Prospects report, commissioned by Defra in response to recent droughts across Eastern England, is to be sent to the Secretary of State, Caroline Spelman.

Farmers have been hardest hit by the recent droughts, relying extensively on rivers to irrigate crops.

Farmers who do not have winter storage reservoirs are urged to consider building them and seeking out possible sources of financial support.

Water cooperatives can help with the sharing of water and voluntary restrictions should be applied in advance of more formal measures.

And we can do the same in our homes. At the moment the droughts have not had a massive impact on domestic supplies, and as such we have avoided restrictions, but it is in all of our interests to save water as much as possible.

A range of water saving solutions are available at BigGreenSmile, including Ripple Water Buckets - ideal for collecting "grey" water to use on the garden.

Caroline Spelman said: "While we have had some much needed rain in recent weeks, events like this year’s drought could become ever more common and all the main players; water companies, farmers and consumers will have a role in dealing with this in the future.

"I asked for this report so we can be better prepared in the future. The recommendations will inform our White Paper that will lay out our plans to deliver affordable, efficient and sustainable water use."
