Supermodel Gisele Bündchen and
Hollywood actor Don Cheadle went head to head in a tree planting challenge in the build up to yesterday's celebrations for World Environment Day.
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Goodwill Ambassadors have pledged to plant a tree for every group, family or individual who has planned a green event for World Environment Day and registered their activity online at the WED website.
Don, throwing down the gauntlet to Gisele, has promised to plant two trees each time.
Whoever wins, and the votes will be in by the time you get to the end of this post, will inaugurate a new forest, leaving a lasting legacy from 2011’s global day.
The theme for this year’s World Environment Day (in case you hadn’t guessed) was "Forests: Nature at Your Service", highlighting the crucial environmental, economic and social roles played by the world’s forests.
The host nation for WED 2011 was India, with events taking place in New Delhi and Bangalore. There were 25,000 runners taking part in The World 10K Race, with the organisers and participants planting a "World 10K Forest", to which more trees will be added at future races.
It’s too late for us lot to sign up to Don and Gisele’s pledge, but if you want to do your bit, in addition, of course, to all of our regular and ongoing commitments to saving water and energy, why not take a look at BigGreenSmile’s FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) approved products.
An estimated 5.2 million hectares of forest are cut down worldwide every year and UNEP chose World Environment Day to publish the Forest in a Green Economy Report.
This outlines how increased investment in forest management and resources can boost employment, reduce deforestation and help tackle climate change. Sounds good to me. Unlike Don’s Cockney accent in Ocean’s 11.
But who won the Tree-Off? The results are in and... Gisele has won by a leaf or two! Gisele has 53% of votes to Don's 47%. Congratulations Gisele, and hard Donald Duck (luck) to Don; Though really you're both winners and heroes (Robert De Niro's).
