Thames Water has come up with nine top tips to help us all do our bit to save water. Here they are, in a slightly truncated form.
- Don’t leave the tap running when brushing your teeth. Turning the tap off can save six litres a minute.
- If you are a customer of Thames Water you can order free water saving devices at its website.
- Try and shower in under four minutes. A shower timer can help stop you from over-running.
- Keep a jug of water in the fridge. That way you won’t have to keep the tap running until the water turns cold.
- Have a water meter fitted so you can see how much you are using.
- Let your lawn turn brown. It will soon recover once it rains again.
- Install a water butt in the garden.
- Only use dishwashers and washing machines when they are full.
- Fix leaking toilets. A leaky toilet wastes 2,800 litres of water a week.
There you go! I hope that helps. Top tips usually come in tens not nines, so to round out this list here’s my number 10. Take a look at BigGreenSmile’s range of water saving devices, such as a Hippo the Water Saver that can save you up to 2.5 litres each time you flush.
