Electric cars for hire in the UK

Want to try out an electric car? They're now being offered to customers to hire from Hertz after the rental company teamed up with Mitsubishi.

Two of the energy saving i-MiEV city cars are already on the go in London, and there are plans to make more available throughout the UK.

The cars can be charged at 16 Hertz charging stations in London, including Heathrow and London City Airport.

The Mayor of London also plans to have charging points across the capital by 2013 - so you will, in time, be able to save on your own electricity bills by charging the car in public to 80% of its capacity within 30 minutes.

For the time being, you can fully charge the car overnight from a domestic source with a standard three pin socket.

Lance Bradley, managing director of Mitsubishi Motors in the UK, said: "We are delighted to partner with Hertz and to be able to offer the i-MiEV to their customers.

"The i-MiEV is a very important vehicle for us, making a statement to the global car industry - being the first mass-produced, zero emission full electric vehicle ever.

"It has a vastly reduced effect on our environment, yet demands absolutely no compromise in terms of safety, comfort, convenience or fun.

"It is a vehicle for the future, available right now - built for the modern city commuter, in a stylish, super-modern, high-tech and exciting package."
