Earth Day Network has joined forces with Facebook to inspire people around the world to do their bit to improve the environment.
The Billion Acts of Green® campaign encourages individuals and organisations across the globe to undertake acts large and small - from switching to energy saving light bulbs to bigger projects achieving lasting change such as greening our cities and schools.
Then, through the Facebook application, the idea is that we share our achievements worldwide and are united through our common aims.
Kathleen Rogers, president and CEO of Earth Day Network, said: "Facebook defines togetherness in the digital age, and has the unique ability to take a positive message and propel it across cultural, national, and religious divides. That’s what Earth Day is all about too."
Social networking sites have taken on an extraordinary power for change over the last few years. It’s nice to keep in touch with the family but recent trends have shown just how much more can be achieved when we use these sites to keep in touch with the world around us.
Jonathan Heiliger, vice-president of technical operations at Facebook, summed up how we can contribute: "Whether pledging to save energy, use less water, use alternative transportation, or take other steps, people can use Facebook to mark Earth Day with meaningful action – and can encourage their friends to do the same.
"This will help Earth Day Network achieve its ‘Billion Acts of Green’ goal."
And, once we reach a billion, onwards and upwards to the next billion.
