Storms lead to rise in wind energy

Wind farms provided the UK with 12.2% of its energy demand on December 28, 2011 - thanks to storms hitting Britain!

The Guardian published figures from RenewableUK showing that this beats the previous record of 10%, and that average wind power production between December 1 and January 5 covered 5.3% of UK power demand.

Sceptics have been decrying the benefits of wind power, claiming that (I suppose rather sensibly and obviously) the wind turbines only provide power when it’s windy, and then they are extremely noisy. Oh, and the old argument about blots on the landscape.

Personally, I like them. I like solar power too. But, if were talking aesthetics, give me a wind turbine any day.

And so, as the country continues to try and reach its carbon emission targets, the rise in wind power must surely be a good thing, helping us save energy elsewhere as fossil fuel bills are reduced and our carbon footprints are lowered.
