Survey shows consumers want to save energy

A survey of 2,407 adults in America has revealed 78% of consumers are keen to monitor their household’s energy use - and they’re also hungry for more information on how to save energy.

The poll was carried out by Harris Interactive on behalf of Whirlpool. Monica Teague, speaking on behalf of Whirlpool Corporation, said: "We are not surprised to see that consumers are devoted to living an energy efficient lifestyle.

"Whirlpool is constantly innovating new products that conserve water and reduce energy consumption in order to help consumers live a more eco-friendly lifestyle."

The survey also showed that consumers are prepared to invest now to save money in the long run, with 49% willing to pay more for an appliance that will reduce their household utility bills over time.

It also highlighted where consumers are, however well intentioned, getting it wrong when it comes to being green. 87% pre-rinse dishes before placing them in the dishwasher; an unnecessary move that can waste up to 20 gallons of water and lead to 230 hours per year spent pre-rinsing.

And so Whirlpool offer these energy saving and water saving (oh, and money saving and time saving) tips to help out:

Make sure your appliances are maintained; keep them clean and empty lint traps on dryers (though really you can’t beat a washing line!)

Use pots and pans that fit the ring size on your cooker. "A 6" pot on an 8" burner wastes over 40% of that burner’s heat," says Whirlpool.

And every time you open your oven door you lose between 25 and 30 degrees of heat, so, simply... don’t. Well, other than for putting things in and taking them out of course.
