WaterAid has held a 24-hour tweetathon on Twitter to let hundreds of thousands of people know more about their work.

The epic tweeting session, called WaterAid24, took place on June 7, and involved 23 countries, and 1,111 tweets under the hashtag #WaterAid24. The tweets reached a potential 1,147,759 readers.

And the aim? To highlight the many teams, skills, and areas of expertise that help the global charity try to create a world where everyone has access to safe water and sanitation.

Twitter users found out about work done in Mozambique to provide safe drinking water for children in primary schools in Maputo, and Nepal’s lack of water- "God gave us the Himalayan rivers but not the pipes".

Celebrity Twitterers got involved too - Clarence House took part (that’s not a person, it’s where Prince Charles lives, WaterAid’s President), as did Plan B and Lauren Laverne. If you’re on Twitter why not follow @wateraid.

Joe Downies, WaterAid’s website manager said: "We wanted to show just how many layers go into our work to deliver safe water, sanitation and hygiene to some of the world’s poorest communities and a wonderful byproduct was a genuine feeling of interconnectedness between WaterAid staff the world over."

It’s easy for us to take our water supply for granted here in the UK. And, in comparison to many countries, we are blessed. But we should never take it for granted, and, as parts of the UK experience drought conditions, we should save water as much as we can.
