Energy saving 'could protect taxpayers'

Energy saving may have an immediate impact in reducing power bills, but it could also have a larger financial significance when 2020 arrives.

If the UK fails to meet its target for increasing its use of sustainable energy generation techniques, the Renewable Energy Centre notes that it could face fines.

However, the money to pay these would ultimately come from the taxpayer, says a spokesperson for the renewable technologies installation advice provider.

"The commitment which the UK has entered into is a legally binding agreement," she says.

She also points out that recent figures have shown the UK as one of the smallest contributors of renewable energy to the EU as a whole.

In order to achieve these energy saving aspirations, she calls for immediate funding to be secured to help projects to move forward.

Over the coming nine years, she adds, barriers that could hold back the development of the UK's natural resources for power generation should also be removed to ensure the targets are met.ADNFCR-2539-ID-19908590-ADNFCR
