Energy saving householders Energy saving householders should install a smart meter in their home to keep track of how much power they are using, an expert has said.

Peter Jenkins, head of communications and public affairs at the Energy Retail Association, said fitting a smart meter will allow consumers to keep a close track of their electricity usage and ultimately save money.

It will enable people to compare their day-by-day energy usage to see where changes in behaviour can be made, he added.

He commented: "The sooner customers get smart meters, the sooner they will be able to save."

In August 2009, the Department for Energy and Climate Change announced that all homes in Britain will be fitted with smart meters over the next 11 years.

A statement from the department explained that the meters will mean an end to estimated bills and readings, while prepayment and switching between suppliers will be made much easier.ADNFCR-2539-ID-19437526-ADNFCR
