Nuclear power Energy saving experts have claimed that nuclear plants must form a part of the UK's power generation.

A spokesman for the Renewable Energy Centre argued that while the use of nuclear power is a contentious issue, it will need to be used to meet the country's demand for energy.

She added that in the future, renewable resources such as wind farms and hydroelectric plants will provide the majority of the UK's power, but in the meantime nuclear has a crucial part to play.

But she warned that the government must act fast to decide how waste from the nuclear plants will be disposed of and who will have to foot the bill for it.

Her comments come after the Department for Energy and Climate Change recently announced that a third potential nuclear operator has entered the UK marketplace.

Energy and climate change secretary Ed Miliband said: "These latest plans, together with the ambition of existing plans from two other operators, mean that new nuclear could power the equivalent of all 26 million homes in the UK."
