Producers of organic
natural skin care formulations have been told to look to the sustainability of their packaging as an area where some could improve on their eco commitments.
Industry analyst Organic Monitor explains that, while the formulation of some cosmetics is certified organic, often they are wrapped up in less sustainable packaging.
"Consumers buying chemical-free products are demanding ecological packaging," the research firm says.
However, this need is not always met, it adds - noting that other sectors such as food and retail have switched to more ecologically sound methods of packaging including reusable carrier bags.
One producer of organic natural skin care solutions, Evolve, was recently recognised for its innovative approach to packaging.
Laura Rudoe wrote on the brand's website that one of her aims when setting up Evolve was to prove that packaging can be beautiful despite being made of recycled materials.
In April she was rewarded for this approach with a Best New Packaging title at the Natural and Organic Product Awards.
