River power

British Waterways has revealed plans for up to 25 small-scale hydro electricity schemes generating enough power for c.40,000 homes to be based near weirs and dams on British rivers. Using the public corporation’s 2,200 mile waterway network the initiative will generate 210,000 megawatt hours of renewable energy per annum.Of course they still have to get planning permission but it sounds like a very interesting project. Last year they announced plans to use riverbanks to build 15 wind turbines with the capacity to generate 100 MWh of renewable energy.
