The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has placed
water saving on a new agenda for creating a green economy to help boost the UK's recovery from recession.
Water saving is one of a number of issues on the Structural Reform Plan published by Defra at the end of last week.
It is to be the subject of a White Paper which gives special attention to the importance of the commodity both to households and utility suppliers.
The paper is due to discuss potential ways to reform the industry for water supply, in part to protect poorer households.
However, a further aim of the review will be a more general desire to improve water efficiency.
"Businesses, communities and individuals need to be supported to innovate and invest, use resources sustainably and reduce waste, so that the economy is resilient to climate change," says environment secretary Caroline Spelman.
Any legislation deemed necessary following the White Paper is scheduled to be introduced between November 2011 and 2012, with the document itself to be published in June 2011.
